St. Louis Police Captain Sam Dotson tells NewsChannel 5 that eight people were shot at ABB Power in St. Louis Thursday morning and three of them have died. Authorities now say one of those dead is the shooter.
Two sources from Collinsville High School said a Collinsville football coach, Cory Wilson, was one of the victims who died in the shooting.
Five people were transported from the scene to nearby hospitals. Three are listed in critical condition, two are in fair condition.
Sources said an employee was inside the building and talking on their cell phone with police when that employee heard a gunshot. It’s believed the gunman may have shot himself before he was found in an office area of the building by police.
The shooting happened around 6:30 a.m. at the ABB Group at Semple and Bircher in north St. Louis. Police said the shooter was armed with an assault rifle.
Captain Sam Dotson said there were no hostages taken inside the building during the incident. He said 40 to 50 people were on the complex when the shooting started. Around 200 people are employed there.
Authorities said all workers were out of the building as of 10:00 a.m.
Interstate 70 was closed in both directions between Jennings Station Road and Kingshighway while police searched for the suspect, but has since reopened.
The St. Louis Police Department was assisted by St. Louis County Police, the Missouri Highway Patrol and several federal agencies.
Chief Jenkerson said firefighter tools were used to gain access to the locked offices in the building to assist in the search.
